Review of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) by Orlando O — 26 Jan 2017
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter does go out with nonstop exciting action, an adrenaline rush pace, and a concluding story arc with the series. I have been a huge fan of Resident Evil from every single game and movies. I can understand Writer/Director Paul W.S. Anderson having his loosely perspectives on the direction of the series. And every one of his Resident Evil films has been exciting and entertaining. His latest film of The Final Chapter is just awesome and everything I would want to expect in a hardcore action film. Lots of action, fast paced, loud instrumental music score, and seeing Milla Jovovich returning on fighting against Umbrella corp., plenty of zombies, and mutated beasts throughout.
Picking up where the last film left off in Washington D.C. after the battle against the undead brought everything down. Humanity is on the edge of extinction. Alice (Milla Jovovich) must return to Raccoon City and on a race against time with an army of undead being on her trail. Alice discovers there is hope on destroying every undead. To do so, she has to return where it all started. In Umbrella corps. Hive facility.
The film is fast paced, basically one action packed set piece to another. And the film never takes a break or slow down. What makes this film different from the others besides the quick editing, making the action gritty and fast. This one does feel like a Mad Max with zombies, as Alice is fighting against Umbrella corp. and the undead on a chase to get to the Hive. Director Paul W.S. Anderson does his best in delivering the intense action, visual effects, and Paul Haslinger hardcore music score. Also, the characters return to the Hive, were they fall into traps, and encountering beasts that lurk in dark areas.
Milla Jovovich returns for the sixth time as the character. Her character story arc goes into more depth as she discovers about Umbrella's motivations for the virus outbreak and there purpose behind the apocalypse without giving away spoilers. The plot concluding is a nice touch up for wrapping up the series. Ali Larter, Ruby Rose, and William Levy roles were small when it came to them in action. Iain Glen returns as the villain and is at his best being sinister as Dr. Isaac. And Shawn Roberts as Wesker with less to do still.
If you enjoy lots of action or a fan of the movies/games, then I definitely recommend. I think its one of the best movies in the series besides the first one. With Alice being vulnerable like she was in the first movie, the world coming to an end. Every action sequence is big and loud. This meets the criteria of an fun blockbuster film. Compared to the last films, the film has less cheesy one liners, less slow motion action shots which is complete opposite with fast quick cuts in this film. A bit more of everything with undead, mutants, and a great satisfying conclusion. Which does leave you wanting more.
