Review of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) by Nico B — 27 Jan 2017
Fitting conclusion to the series and far better than I expected it to be. The action picks up right away after a brief "refresher course" and never lets up until the end. To my surprise, with a more human Alice rather than the T-Virus modified unbeatable superwoman, there were a lot more scares and tense moments than I remembered in previous installments. The monsters seemed like actual threats, rather than just fodder there to make Alice look more bada-- when she dispatched them with ease. The plot is straightforward which is fine for this sort of affair.
The AI known as the Queen gives Alice a way to wipe out all the zombies and mutations just in time to save the rest of the survivors on earth. She just has to fight her way back to the Hive and then navigate her way to its depths to retrieve the antivirus. Not an easy task with thousands or millions of zombies, frightening mutations, and the remnants of Umbrella standing in her way. The movie was fun. Only a few moments that made me roll my eyes, (literally three or four) and other than Alica and maybe the AI it was completely lacking in character development. Yet I still found myself emotionally impacted by one or two of the deaths, particularly one girl who made me a fan with her limited time (pun intended).
And really, we don't watch the Resident Evil movies for character development and riveting drama. It's all about the thrills and the action. This movie was like a roller coaster for me and I'm sure fans of previous installments will love it.
