Review of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) by Kristofer H — 08 Feb 2017
Proper Perspective: It is over, sort of. I mean, "final" by definition means "coming at the end of a series," so don't be a tease Resident Evil. If you dig these movies you will dig this movie with minor complaints about continuity from previous movies in the franchise...
Official Synopsis: Alice returns to where the nightmares began: The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
Plot: The official synopsis is not lying, that is the plot. Alice (Milla Jovovich) is alone at the beginning, then after some warm-up battles meets the level one boss battle against Dr. Isaacs (Ian Glen) before escaping to meet a rag-tag group of rebels sort of led by Claire (Ali Larter) from the previous films, Doc (Eoin Macken), Razor (Fraser James), Abigail (Ruby Rose), Cobalt (Rola), and Christian (William Levy) who are fortified in a weird CGI tower of impracticality.
The fight comes to them when Isaacs and his tour bus of angry religious freaks, a few remaining humans, and about a zillion zombie things come crashing at the front gates.
They battle there to get past level one and phase over to level two.
In level two they fight zombie dogs and a windmill.
Then, in level three, it is time for the boss battle and one good character to turn out to be a bad character.
Fight, fight, conclusion. No spoilers. Sure, why not.
Take: I mean it is fine. The action is confusing as all get out, the movie is a bunch of scenes versus an actual narrative movie, and everything plays out like a video game in spite of this not being a faithful adaptation of the video game it shares a name with.
Jump-cut action is the worst kind, this movie is not the worst offender in this crime, but it is very bad. Director Paul W.S. Anderson has a style and is faithful to it, even if his movies are not super faithful to their source material.
This is a Resident Evil movie so no point really in going after the acting or writing or narrative, they are all poor by default. The action is not very good, but again, if this is a franchise you already enjoy then you are predisposed to the style and will dig this movie too, probably. So go see it if you like the franchise up to this point.
Recommendation: Again, if you are a fan of the franchise go check this one out for the "final" installment and closure. Why not? If you are not a fan of the previous films in this franchise, why are you reading this review or considering seeing the movie?
What a waste of Ruby Rose, what a waste...
