Review of Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) by Allison G — 26 Mar 2013
The fifth entry to the now interminable series is just like watching someone playing a video game. Opening scene leads to survival horror sequence, which segues into shooting gallery, followed by a poorly acted and written cut scene introducing new arena and signposting the next mission, boss fight - rinse, repeat.
Whereas video games (including Resi ones) get away with it by being interactive, there is nothing saving this film from quickly becoming tedious. The same way a film adaptation of a book does not consist of putting the paragraphs of the book up on screen, director Anderson needs to be reminded the same applies for video game adaptations.
The formats are different. Moreover, Anderson's action choreography is not even particularly good, further let down by an abundance of very synthetic SFX. On the plus side, nice cosplay. These leading ladies sure know how to wear their unitards and dresses.
