Review of Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) by Sarah W — 26 Oct 2009
In order to write this review, I have to tell you something about myself. I hate playing video games for the same reason I love watching movies: I'm always focused on the story or turn-of-events; I need to be keeping up with what is happening. When I try to play a video game, having to move my fingers in rhythmic and coordinated ways totally interferes with my watching of what's going on. So if I have a choice between playing a video game or watching a movie, I will ALWAYS choose the movie...unless a third option is offered, the option of watching someone who actually knows what he/she's doing play the video game him/herself. And that was actually my introduction to Resident Evil; watching my roommates play through RE4 during one quarter of college.
In that light, I can tell you the thing I loved most about RE: Degeneration was that watching it felt almost exactly like watching my friends play RE4. The screen was designed to look like the video game, and one of the characters was even Leon S. Kennedy, the protagonist of RE4. And thus, it was very easy for me to just kick back and enjoy the film without getting too far into critic mode. Was this movie perfect? No way. But it was fun! I'm excited for the fourth live-action one to come out next year.
