Review of Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) by Kinnon P — 25 Jan 2009
A 90 minute videogame cutscene with less heart or style than most of the cutscenes in the videogames it's taken from. It's quite bizarre when the sequences being previews from Resident Evil 5 are far more superior than the film here.
Like Final Fantasy Advent Children it's like watching beautiful empty marrionettes drone through swathes of meaningless dialogue before an action sequence is mercifully sprung. The action is good when it comes, but unlike in the game where you've automatically been connected to the visuals by interaction, here I just felt they were brief glimmers of hope before the droning began again.
While more canonical to the games , there's no getting round the woodeness of it all, and this was just as poor as the live action movies for me. They should've made the concept far denser and realised it as a 30 - 40 minute short, something really electrifying, a cut scene at that length could've knocked peoples socks off but at 90 minutes what you really needed was a movie, and this ain't it.
Roll on March.
