Review of Resident Evil (2002) by Zachary H — 11 Aug 2011
While the movie itself isn't bad, it is more of a re-imagining of the Resident Evil concept. The movie's strengths are really in the performances as opposed to the action sequences that seem overblown or just copied (cube).
The movie's glaring weakness, at least in terms of fans who went to see it, was the fact that it has little to nothing to do with the game. The game has a creepy mansion atmosphere and little answers are truly given in the first game.
This movie seems to take more from the later games in the series. This itself is a mistake because the first game is, by far, the best. Depressingly, this film was an extreme let-down to me as a fan of the game, but it wasn't a terrible film.
It as really grown on me, but in comparison with the game, it fails at a very bottom level. I have learned to like the film as a film and the film series that followed, but when compared to the game it really is an abysmal movie.
Viewers who are not familiar with the game will likely be entertained, but fans of the game will be let down. Overall, it isn't a bad movie or a bad story, but it fails a follow-up to one of the best games I have played.
