Review of Resident Evil (2002) by Nick P — 21 Jul 2012
What's the point? The only reason I can see for this movie to be committed to celluloid is to cash in on the popular video game franchise. It starts well enough but then completely devolves into a mash of running, jumping, blood, flashbacks and two bit characters we couldn't care less about.
There's an idea of turning RE into Alien (female protagonist coming out of her shell to become Action Barbie), but it never achieves it's full potential. The acting, surprisingly, isn't the problem.
Nor is the old school CGI (which looks cheesy and fake). It's the fact these characters seem to run through the same corridors every five minutes and they have no personalities to speak of. This person is double crossing that one, everyone has a secret to reveal and a good chunk of them get disposed of together.
RE (the movie) comes off exactly like a video game: a new trap or puzzle to solve around every corner. Enough.
