Review of Resident Evil (2002) by Al M — 17 Aug 2012
I don't care what you think--I love the Resident Evil films. Along with the video games, which I also adore, they are one of my great guilty pleasures. Is there anything original, intelligent, or innovative about the film? No, but it is a thoroughly entertaining combination of sci-fi and horror cliches that is brought to a stylish (if superficial) head by Paul W.
S. Anderson. Resident Evil is all surface, but in many ways that fits with the corporate-controlled, video-game world that it depicts. The film successfully combines cool and brutal visuals, bad-ass music (score by Marilyn Manson and soundtrack featuring NIN and Slipknot), and non-stop action into a completely riveting if totally brain-dead piece of action-horror cinema.
