Review of Reservoir Dogs (1992) by Deanomite — 11 Feb 2020
Rewatching, what makes this movie so timeless? I have been studying psychology and all the major types are there, acting exactly according to their profile. First of all, none of them have identities-the first sign of personality disorder.
Personality disorders are exaggerated in a work environment. Michael Madsen is a psychopath (no emotion, enjoys hurting others). Steve Buscemi is the sociopath (spreads gossip, disregards boundaries of others to damage relationships).
Harvey Keitel is codependent (emotional, concerned more about taking care of others than himself. Tim Roth is introverted narcissist (seeking attention, acting wounded, bragging), Chris Penn is the extroverted narcissist, also called histrionic (over sexualized, flirting).
These people interact exactly the way they do in real life, the accuracy of these types is crazy. I have studied psychology nearly a decade to understand these interactions as well as they are portrayed here.
Plus there is an acting class built into the movie, that adds so much dimension. The culture of the police has good depth, the culture of the criminals has depth.
