Review of Reservoir Dogs (1992) by Hassan I — 15 Jul 2013
A highly entertaining directorial debut from Quentin Tarantino, but overrated and far from his best. This uniquely structured film uses non-linear storytelling very effectively and the performances from the entire ensemble cast are top-notch.
As a first-time director, Quentin Tarantino impresses with a great sense and flair for style, yet substance is where he needs improvement. His script is filled with witty dialogue, also laying out a few intriguing characters, yet Tarantino doesn't use them to their greatest potential.
Certainly, there is spark, charisma and nuances in the way that these characters converse and react to certain situations, but we never quite see any depth. The story, itself, has plenty of twists and surprises to keep the viewer engaged yet it leads to a rather lousy conclusion that wraps things up in a strange way.
In the end, Tarantino has created a commendable film but it seems like he doesn't know what to say about the topic. There's a few signs of genius in this filmmaker, but not enough to show what he is really capable of accomplishing (ex.
Pulp Fiction).
