Review of Rescue Dawn (2007) by Philip S — 16 Mar 2010
I'd heard surprisingly good things about this one, after the trailer did not much to pique my interest. Finally got around to watching it on tv with mondo commercial interruptions (thank goodness for TiVo).
The film starts off a bit slowly, with not much invested in character development. As a result, it's hard to care much about Dieter (Bale) until almost halfway through. The film finds its pace in the second half, with the lunacy of the situation and disturbing mood finally reaching the right tone.
Not surprisingly, the last 20 minutes are the best. Steve Zahn, known for his comedic roles, turns in a solid performance in a difficult role. Overall, a decent film, but there have been many better POW films.
