Review of Rescue Dawn (2007) by Mark H — 29 Jun 2010
Not only is this a POW escape film, but Werner Herzog's special touch adds humanity and hope to Christian Bale's dismal situation. A great compliment to the film's screenwriting and directing is that it isn't dependent, and in fact is seldom in, action scenes.
With Steve Zahn, Jeremy Davies, and Abhijati Jusakul as three of the other POWs with Bale. In this true story war film, Bale, starring as real-life pilot Dieter Dengler, organizes a breakout plan that eventually leads to one of the most heroic escapes in the Viet Nam War.
Herzog's gift for filmmaking stands out in the subtle little scenes that end up most memorable. A surprisingly interesting true story, complimented by a decent screenplay and excellent portrayals, both created by the crew and natural.
B+.
