Review of Requiem for the American Dream (2015) by Eggplant — 26 Nov 2015
I've never understood the value of Chomsky's political sophistry on the underpinnings of the cruel and destructive machinations of capitalism. The audience is treated to the venerated linguist/activist as he stares into the camera and bemoans the inequality and falsehood present in the American government. Facts and figures support his positions but sweep public union lobbying and Federal Reserve manipulations under the carpet. On occasion his discourse is with merit, but one feels deceived by a lack of critical skepticism or economic due diligence.
Also, the dude failed to shave his nose before filming so you have to contend with a good long look at whispy old man hair atop his beak for a great portion of the movie. Hell, that's how the movie starts. Hard open to Chomsky staring at the audience like we're at attendance of an Ingsoc convention. It's a tough movie to wrestle with if you hold reservations, but I suppose if you're already of blind support for his anarch-syndicalist philosophy you'll get a kick out of it.
