Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Dov D — 08 Oct 2012
There is no combination of words potent enough to capture even a fraction of the raw power contained within Darren Aronofsky's cinema masterpiece. There are issues with various aspects of the film, but any problems that do exist are superseded by the unbelievably intense mood set through the unrelenting orchestral assault of Clint Mansell's score and the fast-paced montage style cinematography.
The acting is very good and the audio editing is the best I've ever experienced. This film takes a subject as preachy as 'don't do drugs' and sears it into your mind like you never thought possible.
Bottom line, this movie won't be for everyone, but you may be surprised by how much it winds up impacting you. I would highly recommend this film to everyone over 17 (It is definitely rated R for a reason).
This is one of the few films that comes around which puts everything it has behind it's message and manages to transcend itself.
