Emotionally devastating and shockingly committed to its bleak vision and stylistic direction, the sophomore picture from Aronofsky is almost as difficult to watch as it is to look away from. One of the most powerful anti-drug films ever made.
It is insane that Ellen Burstyn did not win the Academy Award for her tour de force performance; she is soul crushingly depressing in nearly every scene.
