Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by David R — 24 Mar 2014
A powerful film that is difficult to watch while it draws you in. The characters are tragic, but their flaws are not the drugs taking over their lives as much as their emotional burdens/demons. The unique and varied cinematography pulls you into the confused & divergent worlds of the drug addict while the acting (3 Oscar winners lead the cast) humanizes it.
The editing and direction is frenetic, almost like a music video, but it feels appropriate for the story and subject-matter. Honestly this would make for a terrific scared-straight movie for mature teens and young adults.
If you are a parent, it is also a frightening vision of a possible future none of us would ever want for our childrenâ?¦ or ourselves.
