Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Zeus M — 26 Jun 2012
There are few films that are as stark as Requiem for a Dream but which still can demand repeat viewings. Although Requiem is still 'out-there' it is much more accessible that Aronofsky's debut, Pi, which was so off the grid that I haven't managed to rewatch it yet.
Ellen Burstyn's Sara Goldfarb is so heart wrenchingly tragic that its difficult to watch. The trio of Leto, Connely and most remarkably Wayans give the film its energetic heart. Its difficult for me to think of a more affecting film about drug abuse from the modern era, and I include Trainspotting in that.
I still think this is Aronofsky's best film, despite the excellent recent efforts; The Wrestler and Black Swan.
