Review of Repulsion (1965) by Alberto M — 03 Nov 2009
One of Roman Polanski's earliest films - explores an awkward woman's descent into madness as she isolates herself inside her sister's apartment. The mystery surrounds the woman protagonist in the film performed by Catherine Deneuve - the audience knows something isn't right with her, but Polanski is careful not to reveal too much.
Did she suffer something traumatic as a child? Was she raped? Why does she have such an intense fear and anxiety towards men? Polanski only hints at answering these questions. It's a respectable psychological thriller with an eerie, claustrophobic tone and suspenseful moments that are reminiscent of some of Alfred Hitchcock's best scenes on film.
