Review of Repulsion (1965) by Justin S — 01 Mar 2010
What a great piece of filmmaking. Compelling, frightening, eerie, sad and horrific. I can't believe it took me this long to see it. I know there is so much to dislike about Polanski, I mean, I don't even know much about the guy other than the 77 rape and his Manson connections. BUT I can't help it, I love his films, he is a brilliant filmmaker and I fancy myself a filmmaker, and as someone that loves film I can't ignore this fact.
In addition, as someone that has lived with depression for a great part of his life, I can tell you, Polanski got the feeling of losing your mind correct. The way he shoots, the sounds, and Denuve's acting are all spot on...I have lived that image or that tic...it was frighteningly realistic at times.
