Review of Repulsion (1965) by Kevin G — 27 May 2011
This is just so progressively creepy. Roman Polanski really toys with fears and obsessions here, leaving just the right amount of ambiguity to suggest a multitude of things. What's most disturbing about this is how it slowly but surely morphs from something a bit off to a maddening fever dream.
Catherine Deneuve is amazing in this and makes the character so endlessly fascinating to watch. Her constant fears of sexuality and repulsion by all things even simply touched by men is disturbing beyond belief in such a way that you literally feel just as repulsed as her.
Additionally, I love that she has this crazy OCD obsession with cracks and other bizarre things, it even further adds depths to the chaos that begins enveloping the character. I really appreciate how little music is used and how much this relies on uncomfortable long shots and auditory cues.
Overall it's truly a nightmare of a film that manages to keep the audience assessing what's going on, even up until the very end of the film.
