Review of Repulsion (1965) by Adrian B — 25 Dec 2010
"Repulsion" is the break-through film of Roman Polanski and the best I have seen under his direction. It follows the life of a French woman named Carol (Katherine Deneuve) who is sexually repressed and schizophrenic.
The whole film is completely satisfying, effective, and grisly thriller. It is one of the greats from the 1960's that was filmed in black and white for total effect and it is beautiful. The first forty minutes are relatively relaxed and just wonderful to watch, in the way the whole movie was filmed.
We are generally seeing it through the eyes of Carol. The remainder of the film is intense and at times, very disturbing. Polanski does a grand job with this masterpiece of horror. Deneuve's acting is original and she is really hot! I am hoping today's viewers will find this the better film of 1965 over the Best Picture winner "The Sound of Music.
" I certainly did.
