Review of Reprise (2006) by Abilash G — 19 May 2008
Read the NY Times review if you want a pretty picture painted. I didn't like this movie. It feels smart, I liked the pretentious characters and how they showcased their insecurities to the world, but they just didn't ever do anything.
I kept on expecting it to go somewhere. It's like, you have all these potentially great characters played by interesting actors with the beauty of Norway as the backdrop... but where is the story? I hate movies that have potential but the screenplay doesn't have what it takes to actually go somewhere.
This movie pisses me off. Doesn't make me happy really, or sad, or mad, or depressed... it puts me on edge taking everything in waiting and expecting for it to develop into something grand but never delivers.
Though the theater I saw it in in LA (The Landmark) was great. Perfect projection even if it was a dirty used print. (I went on opening day). It almost played like a pretty reality TV show. There's a lot of ideas within in the literature that's shown in the movie, but not a single idea from that movie itself.
