Review of Reprise (2006) by John M — 26 Mar 2009
One of the most promising directorial debuts I've ever seen. He directs with almost as much intelligence and sophistication as you might expect from a more learned director. There are hints of masterpiece within this film, but it does seem to lack a full grasp on how to completely immerse the viewer.
You care for the characters; they are finely written and skillfully performed by the relatively unknown young cast. It is incredibly reminiscent of a film from the French New-Wave era, and that is a compliment.
The editing is really fantastic as well, with its expert timing and great fluidity; even despite its great amount of jump cuts, which I believe worked in favor of the film. However, this film does seem to be a little frenetic at times, which sort of distracts the viewer.
In short, this film shows a lot of promise for Trier, who is definitely an upcoming talent, and I wouldn not mind giving it another watch.
