Review of Reprise (2006) by Jared L — 23 Sep 2008
This film embraces many of the same storytelling conventions (all of which I appreciate) as Roger Avary's Rules of Attraction or, to a lesser extent, any Guy Ritchie film. But, in this case, the subject matter is more serious.
Reprise tells the story of two young, aspiring writers. One is quite stable and focused; the other is embroiled in an existential crisis spiked with heartbreak. Neither is the revelatory novelist he hoped to be.
Both leads portray their characters well: one evoking the sheer confusion of a person who has lost his way and the other cracking under the burden of caring for his troubled friend and watching his inexplicable internal turmoil.
Though layered in shades of gray and accompanied by dark rock music, the movie contains moments of joy and comic relief which draw down the level of tension and purpose and avoids the pitfall of hopelessness.
