Review of Religulous (2008) by Alexander Z — 20 Jun 2012
Maher makes you laugh, but he chooses easy targets, doesn't allow many of them to make a case, and is pretty much as biased as possible. To be fair, you know what he believes at the outset; that he's an atheist that thinks religion will lead to our destruction.
He is able to make some good points, but his treatment of the subject matter is light and doesn't inspire too much pondering, which is sad considering the seriousness of his intent. In the end, it's more a judgement of the misuses of religion by extremists or misinformed people than on religion itself.
After all, religion is a man-made construct. Regardless of whether you believe in a God, religion is human, and human nature being what it is, there's bound to be disagreements and horrible misinterpretations.
Maher wastes his opportunity through generalizations and churns out a funny but poor documentary.
