Review of Religulous (2008) by Johnofhanover — 04 Oct 2008
If Maher had sat down with some intelligent, mainstream Jewish / Christian / Muslim scholars and carried out a disciplined debate, as some critics seem to suggest he should have done, virtually nobody would have bothered to watch this film.
It wouldn't be in theaters - it would be on PBS (which is not exactly the most popular TV channel). This film is a mockery of religion that I imagine will mainly be enjoyed by that small minority of Americans who consider themselves to be atheists or agnostics, and just want to have a laugh at the ridiculous extremes that religion leads to.
If you're not part of that group, and you're looking for a serious examination of the world's religions, try reading some more books and don't look for the answers at your local independent theater.
