Review of Reign Over Me (2007) by Ro R — 21 Jul 2009
Sandler plays a broken man who has lost his entire family in the September 11 WTC attacks.
He has shut himself off from everyone except the old lady who runs the building where he lives. Sandler plays this role very well. You can feel his pain and how distraught he is from the loss he has suffered.
All actors with the exception of the man on the chair, Mike Binder and Shrink Liv Tyler, play their roles well. Don Cheadle is a pleasure to watch, as is Donald Sutherland.
Mike Binder makes it clear that he can't act. In fact, he should focus more on direction rather than acting in his own movies. He should take a leaf out of Clint Eastwoods book on how to do act and direct at the same time.
The story flows well, but is, well, stupid. A man loses his daughters and wife and falls for a sex crazed psycho? I'm all for starting over, but they could have chosen a more suitable character.
It left me feeling confused and disappointed that he would talk to some nut after his loss..
I thought it was cheap and ended suddenly. Could have been much nicer.
It is powerful and that is thanks to Adam Sandlers performance.
