Review of Reds (1981) by David Z — 14 Feb 2008
Minutes into this film, I knew I was witnessing a masterpiece. Flawed, yes. At 3 hours plus, it's too long and there are certainly places that could have used some trimming. But the performances are astounding - an all time best for everyone involved.
The storyline is riveting. And while some of its relevance may be questionable in a post-Cold War world, the messages of individuality and purpose resonate with power. You want romance? Skip the lousy chick flicks playing at your cinema and watch this.
The romance, the score (by Broadway vet Stephen Sondheim,) the politics and history, the acting, the fantastic screenplay, will all fulfill every romantic and cinematic dream you could have. Again, it's not perfect and it's PG rating is a bit absurd (though it did originally receive an R-rating), but this movie is Beatty's masterpiece.
See it now.
