Review of Redbelt (2008) by Karah B — 09 Sep 2008
If you're looking for a film obsessed with backstories, complicated twists and mindless violence, this isn't your film. Redbelt spends little time developing the characters' pasts or even fleshing out their lives.
Instead it presents the issues faced in the moment and each character's reaction to those issues. What makes this film great is that at its most basic, it is a story about what it means to live by strict right and wrong principles when no one else does, and how in the end, despite suffering, staying true to those beliefs will be a greater reward than anything money can bring.
Redbelt is well written and performed. And most importantly it makes its point by example and not by preaching.
