Review of Redbelt (2008) by Ariel B — 01 Sep 2008
Nothing infuriates me more than a poor action flick. You know the kind, where the producers are out for a quick buck. The director just wants to get it over with. The writer was a little too busy thinking about his pending divorce. And the muscle bound actor can barely speak English and has an IQ of 60. You suffer through 30 minutes of a contrived plot only to be bombarded by an onslaught of obviously fake punches and kick that wouldn't hurt my 3 y/o. And gun fights that turn a car into swiss cheese, but miraculously every bullet avoids the occupants.
REDBELT bares none of there qualities. A breath of fresh air, it combines great acting with a good plot and most importantly, brutal action sequences that will make you hold your breath. A great job acting by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Mortimer, and Tim Allen of all people, give David Mamet exactly what he was shooting for. A brilliant movie that will leave you cheering and maybe even a bit choked up when the credits roll.
