Review of Redbelt (2008) by Martin K — 24 Sep 2008
Change of pace for Mamet (to say the least) revolving as it does around a Martial arts academy and all matters of honour that surround that discipline. But alongside that remain many more typical Mamet aspects of storytelling and film-making: heartless big business screwing the little guy; those thought to be allies turning out not to be; a comedy actor (in this case Tim Allen) doing a creditable turn as a slimy shit (see also Steve Martin in "The Spanish Prisoner").
And the crowning glory, as always, is the dialogue. Those expecting the staccato usual won't be disappointed: Ask a question; attempt to answer, interrupted; question repeated; attempt to answer, interrupted again; question repeated again, but change of tone makes its rhetorical nature clear; no answer, just impotent silence.
Genius...
