Review of Redbelt (2008) by Kris K — 30 Dec 2008
Redbelt feels kind of unfinished especially by Mamet's precise standards. It just feels like Mamet could've taken the story a lot further. But Redbelt works on it's own simplified terms. The performances are good, nothing great- It takes a certain actor to pull off Mamet's odd, repetitive dialogue and no one here really excels at it.
Ejiofor is a great, snappy actor but the saintly hero role really isn't for him. The fight scene at the end though redeems a lot of the films flaws. It works so well cuz it's not your average climactic bout.
This scene dodges and uses the audiences expectations of what a fight scene should be to achieve a great level of suspense. By the end our hero's definitions of honor and pride have been shifted. Not necessarily for the best and not necessarily for the worst.
