Review of Redbelt (2008) by Alex E — 02 Jan 2009
Even more evidence as to why Chiwetel Eijofor would be one of the biggest movie stars in the world if only his name were easier to pronounce, this oddly compelling hybrid of martial-arts sports film and character study explores the difficulties of applying strict codes of honor to a morally ambiguous world.
A talented cast of Mamet regulars and newbies, marvelous fight sequences and the fine work of legendary cinematographer Robert Elswit make this one of the year's most underrated films. Mamet's script has its creaky contrivances, but his touch as a director is more nuanced than ever.
