Review of Redbelt (2008) by Joshua T — 26 Feb 2009
Mamet is probably the reigning champ when it comes to taking a conventional, hell, even boring, story and flipping it over/twisting it around until you're watching something absolutely original. And forget about predicting where his stories go.
Granted, this is nowhere near the perfection of 'Glengarry Glen Ross', but it's still in his top three best films I'd say. Don't be fooled by the casting of Tim Allen; he does great, but he's only in it for a total of about 7 minutes.
The part that really got to me was Chiwetel's walk to the ring. Having to fight your way through obstacle after obstacle just to finally get to the real fight is something that always seems wonderfully inspired and poetic to me--and I'm a sucker for that theme every single time.
