Review of Redbelt (2008) by Jason P — 27 Mar 2011
I have a feeling, in reading the reviews and all of that, that people went to see this movie expecting an action martial arts film and what they got was too brainy for them. Its sad that this film was so overlooked as I think David Mamet is extremely talented and probably one of the best screenwriters in Hollywood right now.
This is classic Mamet, with characters whose agenda's are never what you expect with one sole hope in the character of Mike Terry who Ejiofor plays so great. The ending sequence is so incredibly confusing and seems so incredibly fake that you have to question what exactly is it that Mamet wants you to see and think.
This movie and Mamet (in all his movies) wants the viewer to feel like they need to finish their quest, paralleling the main character's story. I understand some of the criticisms thrown at this movie and I have found out that this movie is so polarizing.
Like a film critic said, the main character in all of Mamet's films is the script and here, it works.
