Review of Redbelt (2008) by Aly I — 08 Jan 2009
Unlike my last two reviews, there is quite a bit about to say about this film. First would be the lead performance, which I'm sure has already been talked about so I won't spend much time on that.
Ejiofor is really great and has a delivery that is nearly always perfect. I still have a few major films to see before I can give a solid list for the year, but he will likely command a lot of attention for a top five slot.
Next is the dialogue, something that Mamet has crafted so incredibly that it's not difficult to be drawn into this world he presents. I call it a world rather than realistic because he makes use of so many chance occurrences that the dialogue also almost seems too perfect, almost scripted, a technique that I'm sure, as a playwright, he's familiar with, and it works perfectly with the film, for obvious reasons.
It also plays out like a tragedy, or at least that's how I read the film, and I think it works spectacularly. Also Tim Allen, who I've never seen in a serious role before, was really solid. The other supporters were a bit shaky, but they were serviceable.
I really enjoyed this film immensely, and I'm glad I got a chance to check it out. 4.1590385735.
