Review of Red State (2011) by Jon A — 06 Feb 2012
This was certainly entertaining and riveting. But it wasn't without it's share of issues. For one, there is no real protagonist...you might be able to make an argument for John Goodman, but not really. So you don't have a real rooting interest in any of it, except maybe because the bad guys are so hate-able that you are just rooting against them. The movie also switches between genres, so the first third is horror, the 2nd third is more of action/thriller, and the last 3rd is conspiracy type movie. Which would be ok, but both times they switch it's very abrupt and a little jarring.
All that being said, the action and horror are good, and Michael Parks is pretty memorable as the main bad guy. The ending is pretty good too.
An interesting movie for Kevin Smith, nothing like anything else he has ever done.
