Review of Red State (2011) by Bryan K — 03 Nov 2012
Though the Westboro Baptist Church is a ripe entity to be exploited through film, this take on the cult crosses the border between distressingly real and disbelief. Though scenes involving the preacher speaking actually come off convincing, the film's rapid disintegration into violence and stilted political commentary comes off as forced.
The plot involving high schoolers that facilitates the film accounts for maybe 15 minutes of the entire run time, with the rest being so over the top that there is nothing to be learned or otherwise taken from it.
The horror tag is also a misnomer...this is a shoot 'em up, nothing more.
