Review of Red State (2011) by Jared F — 24 May 2013
You know you've got something interesting on your hands when trying to stick a movie to a genre and you say, 'well its a bit like horror movie, with touches of religous controversy and social commentary, with just-a-sprinkle of political pertinence, interspersed with dark comedy here and there" .
. it's a landmark peice of cinema history in my opinion .. the more I watch it the more I realize just how well constructed this film is .. the strange morphing format with experimental pacing is refreshing, and at the same time subtle .
. the story is so engaging, we don't care main characters are introduced halfway through, or that fifteen minute monologues practically halt the story .. Smith successfully smooths the sharp tonal shifts just enough all the while leaving them noticable enough to create a unique, if not new, method of moviemaking .
. Kevin Smith's original scripted ending of 'the rapture' sounded a lot more amazing to me then the actual ending to the story, but I heard he couldn't find the money to make it, and that's a damn shame, so the current ending kind of detracts from the overall experience, but it's not bad by any means .
. 'red state' changes up every time you think you know what's going to happen and that is all I really look for in films anymore ..
