Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Jluis_001 — 22 Mar 2018
The script lacks direction and therefore the suspense is null and that is a huge problem when we are talking about a thriller about spies and considering all the patriotic and moral ambiguity of all the people involved, very soon it no longer matters which side ended up taking the best part.
Jennifer Lawrence manages to act in a good way when needed but she practically spends the whole film with a cold and empty look that could be considered necessary because of the nature of her character but it ends up playing against her because her fate ceases to be relevant most of the time, especially in the final part.
Francis Lawrence tried to make a dark thriller for adults and I admit that he tried, but he really needed a better story and also he needed to step up his filmmaking skills to get a better rhythm to his narrative and especially to know where to cut because with 140 minutes, Red Sparrow feels incredibly excessive.
It wasn't so bad but it will be an irrelevant movie in the career of everyone involved.
