Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Julie N — 01 Jul 2018
First glance through the contrast theme of black and white, the premonition of how the leads would have to struggle emerged. The movie was a dark and obsessive thriller although in my opinion, there were still holes in acting, timeline, and transitions between scenes. There was also not enough time for chemistry between the leads to fully develop. What audiences may find obsessed with is the transformation of an innocent, talented, young girl into an attractive, fierce, and intelligent agent.
One can say, torn between patriotic and personal happiness, the female lead was physically and mentally tortured. But I only saw a desperate passion to have her mother and herself safe. Above all, is the notion of having no choice. Some may have criticized the blank looks on Jennifer Lawrence's face as not knowing how to act. I see it as the truest symbol of innocence. Sometimes, silence is all she got. Trust and be trusted by no one, or rather, there was no one she could trust.
