Review of Red Sonja (1985) by Jc E — 07 Sep 2010
Is it bad that when Hollywood makes a hit with a male lead that they generally are clamoring to make a similar movie with a female lead? In the case of this film, yes. There are some films that that formula works for ? Angelina Jolie?s ?Salt? was a pretty good follow-up to Matt Damon?s Jason Bourne films ? while it works dismally for others ? everyone pretty much agrees that Jennifer Garner?s character in ?Daredevil? didn?t deserve/require the spinoff ?Elektra?.
However, it?s apparent that with the success of ?Conan?, producers in the 80s were anxious to have a woman warrior film. Perhaps if it hadn?t pretty much followed the exact formula of the Conan movies ? not to mention include Arnold Schwarzenegger in a Conan-esque role ? it could have at least achieved mediocrity.
If you want to see a good revenge flick with a female lead without hints of lesbianism, an annoying kid, or elements of the cheesy supernatural, then go pick up ?Kill Bill?. It?s infinitely better than this schlock ? which probably explains why Brigitte Nielsen hasn?t headlined a major film since her debut this.
