Review of Red Rock West (1993) by Jac W — 01 May 2010
The first Neo Noir from dynamite indie stylist John Dahl (The Last Seduction, Rounders) is also his best. Nicolas Cage plays a down-and-out Texan looking for work in Wyomingâ??Best of Luck! After an easy lie and a series of nightmarish coincidences, just like the best noirs, Cageâ??s drifter must battle the wits and wills of various monsters: Dennis Hopperâ??s Boogie Woogie Hitman, JT Walshâ??s unraveling bartender, and Lara Flynn Boyleâ??s typical femme fatale.
And Boyle is probably the weakest element of the pictureâ?¦she just grates the nerves. But Cage is phenomenal and the climax is deeply satisfying for this genre fan. VF.
