Review of Red Road (2006) by Rajneel S — 01 Mar 2008
Vivid, atmospheric, almost documentary in feel, digi-feature suffers from all of the pitfalls of low-budget digi-features. The film derails thanks to a lacklustre revelation that is kept in wraps for WAY too long and has an awesome first act involving CCTV surveillance which is never revisited or explored thoroughly.
The acting is VERY real and convincing, the direction is well-thought out and Glasgow has never looked more seedy and disgusting than in this film, but the movie is long, slow, repetitive, unsatisfying and gives supposition that indie/art films need to learn from Hollywood's use of stylization, strong thematic content and symbology as MUCH as Hollywood needs to learn from the art/indie world's ability to render genuine characters and emotion.
Will only appeal to people who like this kind of "rebellious" filmmaking.
