Review of Red Road (2006) by Neil K — 30 Aug 2009
A very impressive piece of British cinema, perhaps a bit closer to Shane Meadows than Mike Leigh/Ken Loach. A wonderfully authentic story about human loss and the need for closure after a family tragedy.
But its also a tale of cool, calculated revenge best served cold, though without all the cliches. Its all shot like a slow burning suspense Hitchcockian style thriller which keeps your eyes rivetted to the screen in case you miss any nuances in the plot.
The inner city Glasgow locations are the real deal; bleak and intimidating but not without warmth and humanity too. The acting is simply first class, especially Kate Dickie's performance.
