Review of Red Road (2006) by Jimmy C — 12 Apr 2010
A fascinating debut from Andrea Arnold, following Jackie, a CCTV operator who becomes obsessed with a man from her past she has seen on screen. It's a typically British film in some ways; its setting would be fitting for a Ken Loach movie.
Yet it credits the audience with intelligence. There is no obvious signposting, which adds to the tension, and allows sympathy for the main characters to build slowly. It's beautifully shot; the Red Road flats are dank and claustrophobic, and the surprisingly uplifting ending is matched by a burst of sunshine into Jackie's drab life.
