An entertaining Western that doubles as an analysis of family dynamics. John Wayne and Montgomery Clift play two cattle ranchers whose surrogate father-son bond is supplanted when Wayne becomes an iron-fisted boss, leading his "son" and hired hands to mutiny.

Several sequences, including a stampede and Indian attack are thrilling (though, in a film like this from the specific era, obligatory) and the scenes between Wayne and Clift display the two leads in fine form.

"Red River" is overlong, and the storyline with Joanne Dru seems tacked-on. However, the presence of her character also leads to one of the most atypical endings for a Western ever.
