Review of Red Lights (2012) by Cath O — 18 Jun 2012
A film of two halves! Things begin well with Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy an unlikely double act de-bunking fake psychics. Robert DeNiro in his usual sleepwalking acting style then pops up as a blind psychic who Weaver has a past with. He is returning to the psychic theatre scene with Murphy desperate to test whether he has any real psychic ability.
So far, so X Files, and pretty good. Terrific supporting actors Toby Jones, Joely Richardson and Elizabeth Olsen all appear (but are pretty much wasted in poorly underwritten roles).
However, about halfway through, things go completely to hell. A major character disappears, Murphy and DeNiro get into the overacting and there is a completely gratuitous and over violent fight scene in a bathroom that serves no purpose at all. Then there is the even more absurd twist ending that is just the final straw. Promising first hour, totally shite second half!!
