Review of Red Eye (2005) by Tim B — 29 Jun 2009
After seeing the wretched "Cursed", I hoped for Craven to get a second chance and after seeing this movie, I still have hope and am satisfied for now. Have you ever seen one of those 'clever' Morgan Freeman thrillers from the 90s (Seven aside)? Then you've seen this one before.
There isnothing new here. Surprisingly though, I was never bored from it. It helped that the two leads were portrayed by two actors I love. Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams were awesome in their roles and played off eachother like champs.
Craven was also on top of his game here. He gave the odd cool shot (for such a small set likea plane, that's a feat) and kept suspense throughout most of its run time. But again, if you've seen any movie of this type before, you know what's going to go down.
Conventions arose and stayed there for most of the plot. It got even worse once the main setting wasn't the plane anymore. It got pretty over the top at times and when it ended, I was left hanging there.
Come on, get a bit more daring with these types of thrillers! But I still couldn't help but like this one. It was somewhat tense, somehat entertaining, quick and easy. It just missing the ingredients that make these types of thrillers good: originality, daring moves and unpredictability.
Safe bet for a wasted Sunday.
